Key takeaways
- Variations keep normal betting and change wild cards or the winning hand.
- AK47 has 16 wild cards; Muflis makes the lowest hand win.
- With wild cards in play, a natural Pair becomes weak.
- Learn classic rules first; every variation builds on them.
How Variations Work
Every Teen Patti variation keeps the normal betting: boot, blind and seen, chaal, side show and show. What changes is usually one of two things: which cards are wild or which hand wins. A wild card (joker) can stand in for any card you need. In most versions, a hand made with wild cards ranks the same as the natural hand, and the natural hand wins a tie.
Here's the catch with jokers: once they're in the deck, good hands stop being special. A pair of Queens that would make you smile in a classic game is barely average when half the table is holding a wild card, so your betting has to shift with it.
AK47
The name is the rule. Aces, Kings, 4s and 7s all act as jokers, which puts sixteen wild cards, close to one in three, into a 52-card deck. Land two of them and you've got a Trail whatever the third card is. In this game Trails and runs turn up constantly, so don't get attached to a natural Pair.

Muflis (Lowball)
Everything you've learned about rankings, flip it. In Muflis the lowest hand takes the pot, so mixed-suit 5-3-2 is now the dream and three Aces is the nightmare. It's surprisingly hard the first few rounds, because your gut keeps cheering for the wrong cards.
Joker (Open Joker)
Once everyone has their three cards, the dealer flips one more card face up for the whole table. That card's rank turns wild for the round: flip a 9 and the remaining three 9s become jokers. Since the joker is public, you can make a fair guess at how many wild cards might be sitting in other hands.
Lowest Joker
Each player's lowest card is wild in their own hand. With K♠ 9♦ 3♣, the 3 is wild, so you can turn it into a 9 for a Pair or a K for a Pair of Kings. Nearly every hand becomes at least a Pair.
Highest Joker
The mirror image: your highest card is wild. It's popular because it feels less random than AK47 while still producing big hands.
999
Hands don't use the normal ranking at all. Each player arranges their three cards into a three-digit number. Aces count as 1, number cards as their value, and 10s and face cards as 0. The number closest to 999 wins. With 9♠ 9♦ 8♣ you'd make 998. It's more about arithmetic than reading opponents.
Best of Four
Each player gets four cards and uses the best three at the show. The extra card means stronger hands on average, roughly what you'd expect from a light wild-card game, without any jokers.
Which Variation Should You Play?
| Variation | What changes | Feels like | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AK47 | 16 fixed wild cards | Big hands everywhere | Fast, chaotic rounds |
| Muflis | Lowest hand wins | Backwards thinking | Players who know the rankings well |
| Joker | One open rank is wild | Classic with a twist | Most groups |
| Lowest / Highest Joker | One personal wild card | Almost every hand is a Pair+ | Casual family games |
| 999 | Number game | Arithmetic | Something completely different |
| Best of Four | Four cards, keep three | Slightly stronger hands | A gentle step up from classic |
If you're new, master the classic rules first. Every variation is easier once the standard hand rankings are automatic.
